In 1923, a school newspaper reporter first referred to the team as "Demon Deacons," in recognition of what he termed their "devilish" play and fighting spirit. The name has, of course, remained as one of the most unique in America and continues to serve Wake Forest well, as the smallest school to ever compete in the Bowl Championship Series. The university received its name from its original location in Wake Forest, north of Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1956, the university moved to its current location, north of downtown Winston Salem.

Known as the Bedlam football game, the annual battle is between the Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the University of Oklahoma. Like most other intrastate rivalries, the Bedlam Series goes beyond football. It began more than 100 years ago with the rivalry between the two schools' prestigious wrestling programs. Today, football and basketball games stand out as the marquee events. This Bedlam football game was hosted by the Cowboys at Boone Pickens Stadium but regardless of location, Bedlam is for Oklahoma bragging rights and is one of the most intense games of the year.

Established in 1890, the University enrolls over 20,000 students on its Stillwater, Oklahoma campus.
